Crescent Stonewall Station

Mixed Use

Charlotte’s first vertically joined Whole Foods will be part of the new 3.6 acre Crescent Stonewall Station mixed use project. Ourpackage included the 10-story high rise, nine levels of parking, and 91,000 sq ft of a 30-ft elevated beam/slab podium that supports 5 stories of wood framing over a Whole Foods/Whole Body retail shell. The project was completed within the 52-week schedule.

Due to the nature of the design assist project, our team has grown and adapted to handle daily drawing changes and design updates. To ensure the project’s success and keep a high level of accuracy, our team has unitized our detailed daily planning process to identify and communicate all changes to both field leads and the craft. RFIs are printed every morning and distributed to the entire project team.

Along with the evolving design, our project team has been tasked with accelerating the project schedule. To accommodate the new schedule the team added two more crews and tripled their DOKA formwork to cover the milestone podium area; providing finished elevated deck faster than formwork can be physically cycled. The charlotte BURG has also utilized fellow BURG’S resources (Greenville, Raleigh, Charleston) during the duration of the project to help in acceleration.

The construction site itself created challenges for the team; bordering the Lync Light Rail on the west, I277 on the south, and Stonewall St to the North. The team overcame these tight site logistics by providing input for tower crane placement(s), and utilizing concrete placement boom(s). Teaming up with Whiting-Turner early on during preconstruction became key on both tower crane placement and sizing, giving the team the availability to use concrete placement booms. Joining forces with Coastal Carolina Pumping and Concrete Supply, the stonewall project is utilizing three placement booms and mobile concrete pumps for the daily placements activities. With the dedicated onsite place and finish team, the Stonewall project has forecasted daily multiple elevated deck pours encompassing all areas: Beam slab podium, parking garage, and high rise structure. The team has been working at a pace of 35,000 square feet of elevated deck per week.

With a completely new team grabbing the reigns from the start, the Stonewall Project team has grown and developed into machine of quality, safety, and excellence.
